suggestions for Summer screenings?

The time has come once again to make your suggestions for movies to screen when we start back up for our end-of-Summer schedule.

Think of movies that would be good to see on the bigger screen out under the stars in our backyard. Truly independent movies, local movies, or impossibly artsy movies that deserve to be screened at a microcinema. Plus, we try to fit one documentary and something foreign into each schedule.

If you’ve never posted a comment here before, your first post will be delayed for approval by the moderator (me). After I know you’re not spam, your comments get posted automatically.

Instead of a list of all the movies we’ve screened over the past year, here’s a list of the ones that for one reason or another have gone over the best or been the most memorable. It’s not always what you’d expect:

August 11 2006: If…
August 31: Breaking Away
Sep 14: Papillon
Tues Sep 19: [Bollywood night]
Oct 5: Wizard People, Dear Reader
Mon Oct 9: Who is Bozo Texino?
Oct 19: Plague Dogs
Oct 26: the Fearless Vampire Killers
Nov 2: Ann Arbor Film Festival pre-screening screening
Feb 1: Zardoz
Feb 8: A Thousand Clowns
Feb 22: the Beaver Trilogy
May 17: Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
June 21: Angel Heart

Maybe that gives you some idea of what might work. Now get those suggestions coming...

I mentioned this at the last craft night I was at, and I’ll throw it out here. I’d highly recommend the movie Tampopo . The best description I’ve heard of it is “Noodle Western”, and it is absolutely brilliant.

  2. Timothy Says:

Yes, I saw a little piece of paper in the craft room with “Tampopo” written on it. Absolutely brilliant, I agree. It was screened, partly by my urging, at Twitch, the Barn’s predecessor Microcinema which projected onto the big wall behind the Michigan theater. But that was a couple years ago. Maybe it’s time for another screening.

  3. girlnextdoor Says:

we also screened tampopo at sushi at the bluish barn, didn’t we?

  4. Timothy Says:

Oh yeah, I forgot since it was Sushi Night, not a regular screening. I knew I’d seen it recently. But that was before Michelle and Christina got back, so maybe they’ll still want to see it.

  5. girlnextdoor Says:

I feel like it is worth seeing again, definitely. I consulted my coworker who recommended Tampopo and his additional recommendation was A Quiet Life (not comedy, but very good, he says.)

I gleaned some from my past netflix rentals and other dusty corners of my brain:

    Comedy:
Bubba Ho-Tep (Ossie Davis is the best JFK ever)
    Six-String Samurai

    Drama:
    2 Secondes
Me and You and Everyone We Know

    Classics:
    The Great Dictator
    Duck Soup

    Foreign:
    The Happiness of the Katakuris
    Woman in the Dunes
    Seven Samurai
    Man on the Train

    Documentary:
    The Atomic Cafe
    $100 and a T-Shirt

    Uncategorizable/Cult:
    Slacker

Has ‘Gleaners and I’ been screened in a while? Also aren’t all of good ole’ Guy Debords movies rereleased? I am in a french mood I guess.

  8. Timothy Says:

Weird. I just watched Man on the Train for the first time last night. And Woman in the Dunes is one of my all-time favorites, despite the disapproval of some of my closest friends. Katakuris would be quite fun - good pick. Atomic Cafe I’d watch again just for the part when the prison guard is describing the execution of the Rosenbergs. One of my possible picks was Magnificent Seven, the Seven Samurai remake. The rest we’ll have to consider… Thanks, Tom.

Zack, I still haven’t seen ‘Gleaners and I’. Do you recommend it? I think my housemates will veto any Debord.

  9. erin Says:

I really love that Angel Heart made it onto that list…

I’m drawing a blank for suggestions, but again I’ll say Rubin & Ed

There’s also Fishing with John… Some of the episodes are definitely better than others - the one with Willem Dafoe is awesome.

  10. girl next door Says:

crazy, the “man on the train” recommendation was posted as we were watching it!

what about “Au revoir, les enfants ?”

  11. Thomas Says:

Woman in the Dunes really is the quintessential sand movie.

  12. Zack Says:

I have seen ‘The Gleaners and I’ and it is awesome. Highly reccomended. (And totally not related to Debord). It is a very lively documentary by a famous surrelaist director, and it is about her run ins with a few different gleaners in France. Perfect for fans of dumpster diving and mushroom hunting. (The last part about the language teacher is problematic, but it will give you something to argue about).

And why no Debord. Too boring?

  13. Beca Says:

Um. I still vote for Dave Chapelle’s Block Party, even though it’s pretty commercial. That movie makes me pee my pants every time I watch it.

How bout The Tin Drum? Or Marat/Sade? I also love The Ice Storm (too commercial?)

  14. Beca Says:

    Another thought on a limb–Idiocracy?

  15. Zack Says:

A few more suggestions: how about some Jan Svankmajer? Every series needs at least some animation, and a collection of his shorts would make me very happy (if I were there).

Also Krzysztof Kieslowski and one of the Three colors trilogy? I have only seen ‘Blue’ but it was sweet.

And I think more Werner Herzog is never a bad thing.

Also, I give my thumbs up for ‘Idiocracy’. When I watched it with Beca I cracked up. Admittedly I had a bit to drink, but thats probably would have been true in the summer at the BB.

  16. Timothy Says:

The Squirm Orchestra will be doing some live music to Svankmajer on August 5th. More on that when I post a schedule - probably Sunday. Get excited.

  17. m Says:

care for a little classic comedy? my man godfrey. william powell and carole lombard. delish!

  18. Mrrranda Says:

I feel a little weird posting these right before I move *out* of Ann Arbor, but since I’ll still be around for parts of the fall I thought I’d pitch these:

La Decima Vittima (The 10th Victim)

The Holy Mountain/El Topo, in case you missed it during this year’s film festival.

    Black Lizard

and if you’re up for an epic affair -
    Don
